Rare Plant Habitat Stewardship
Tollhouse, Sierra National Forest
Date: Sunday, April 19th
Time: 8:00am - 12:00pm
Central California Botanists, the California Native Plant Society (Sequoia Chapter), and the Sierra National Forest invite you to join us for a rare plant habitat stewardship initiative in eastern Fresno County.
Tollhouse Rock is a striking granite outcrop in the Sierra Nevada foothills, supporting a unique mix of native plants adapted to shallow soils, exposed rock, and seasonal moisture. These habitats are home to locally endemic, uncommon, and sensitive species such as Orange lupine (Lupinus citrinus var. citrinus) and Bush anemone (Carpenteria californica).
This field day is designed for anyone interested in plants, local landscapes, and conservation. No professional background required. We’ll hike together to the summit, spend time removing trash and debris from sensitive habitat, and map native flora with guidance from project partners.
After the stewardship work, participants are welcome to stay for a relaxed lunch break and discussion about the plants, ecology, and conservation challenges of the region.
Participants should expect uneven terrain and a moderately steep hike. The route is two miles round trip with moderate elevation gain. Please come prepared with sturdy footwear, plenty of water, work gloves, and a packed lunch. We will have a cooler with additional water available on site.
Additional Notes:
• Participants will be asked to sign a U.S. Forest Service volunteer agreement on-site
• This event is held in partnership with local conservation organizations and public land managers working to support the health of the Sierra National Forest
Free to attend. To protect sensitive habitat and ensure a quality experience, participation is limited and RSVP is required.
